
The Department of Product and Industrial Design had the privilege to Dr. Neelum Naz, a distinguished Professor Emeritus from the Department of Architecture at UET, Lahore, graced the Department of Product & Industrial Design as a guest speaker. Her insightful lecture centered on fostering creativity and cultivating an appreciation for history among the university students. Dr. Naz is the recipient of Best University Teacher Award by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2006 and Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah Award by the Government of Punjab in 2008. She possesses an immense passion for teaching history, backed by three decades of experience in instilling a deep appreciation for the subject.
She emphasized how history fosters inquiry-based learning, guiding students from Lower Order Thinking (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking (HOTS), a crucial transition for nurturing creativity and critical thinking. Dr. Naz highlighted the enthralling essence of history, emphasizing its significance in the philosophy of “Know Yourself to Grow Yourself.”. Within the session, she outlined nine distinctive qualities of creative minds, prompting students to introspect and evaluate themselves against these benchmarks. The students wholeheartedly embraced this activity, relishing its value and igniting vibrant brainstorming sessions.
She delved into various methodologies and instruments for teaching history, advocating for the transformation of design studios into dynamic museums. This adaptation would enable students to actively trace the evolution of diverse products. Her conclusion highlighted the emergence of various design movements post the Industrial Revolution and their profound impacts on the realm of product design.
The session concluded on a positive note, featuring an engaging Q&A session that provided our audience with the opportunity to interact directly with Dr. Naz and explore the discussed topics in greater detail.
