“We preserve knowledge for posterity.”
Ms. Syeda Shamin Asghar Ali Jafri (Director, Archive)
The Department of Product and Industrial Design extends its sincere gratitude to Ms. Syeda Shamin Asghar Ali Jafri, Director of the Archive, for her insightful lecture on the preservation of historical records. She provided a comprehensive overview of the preservation, conservation, and restoration of paper-based materials—an invaluable asset in safeguarding ancient manuscripts dating back over 1,800 years.
Archival historical records play a vital role in connecting contemporary society with the heritage of earlier civilizations, particularly those of Central Asia. She explained the systematic processes through which records are acquired, classified, maintained, and preserved for researchers, academicians, historians, scholars, and the general public. Her dedicated efforts have enabled access to significant documents from various historical periods, which are meticulously treated and stabilized using scientific paper-preservation techniques.
Fragile paper records are carefully cleaned, repaired, and protected from heat, light, moisture, and other environmental threats with exceptional precision and care. The archive library and museum stand as a testament to her tireless commitment to safeguarding the national heritage.
The subject teacher, Ms. Asma Khalid (Assistant Professor), along with the first-year students of the Department of Product and Industrial Design, UET Lahore, expresses their sincere appreciation for sharing her expertise on the preservation and digitization of historical records.
